⭐NEW⭐ Policy on emails written with AI⭐
I ignore all emails that read as AI-generated. I would rather you send me an email that is rife with typos, grammatical errors, and awkwardness than a polished AI-vomited email. I would equally rather you simply email me the prompt you planned to pass to your AI. If you believe I ignored your email because it read as AI, I encourage you to re-email me, following these guidelines.
When to email me
Q: Are you enrolled (or considering enrolling) in 11-711?
Please email the instructor mailing list: f2026-11-711@andrew.cmu.edu.
Q: Do you have a question or comment about my research?
Please email me at daphnei[@]cmu.edu.
Q: Are you a current or admitted CMU student and interested in being advised by me on a project?
Please email me at daphnei[@]cmu.edu with the string "[INTERESTED CMU STUDENT]" in the subject line. Make sure to mention what kind of research you'd like to do, and how it aligns with my group's research focus.
Q: Are you applying to CMU but have not been admitted yet?
Do not email me until you have been admitted.
Q: Are you a student at another university, but you want to do research with me?
I am not currently taking any interns or additional research mentees. Please do not email me at this time.
When to email me a second (or n-th) time
I can get dozens of emails from students per week. If your email did not follow the guidelines above, I might have ignored it. If your email, did follow these guidelines, there is a good chance I just completely missed it. If I don't get back to you after a week, I apologize that I've missed your email. Please re-read the above guidelines, and if appropriate, shoot me a reminder email, and I'll try to get back to you soon.
